WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN INFLATABLE PADDLE BOARDS AND HARD PADDLE BOARDS?

Essentially, not very much. Both inflatable paddle boards and hard paddle boards are stable, durable, great for all skill levels, and tons of fun. Inflatable paddle boards tend to be lighter, extremely durable, and have a higher weight capacity. Hard stand up paddle boards tend to be a bit heavier, more rigid, glide through the water easier due to having a lower volume, and less affected by wind, as they sit lower in the water. Usually, we tell people that if they are asking this question, they won’t be able to tell the difference!

WHAT’S SUP?

SUP is simply short for stand up paddle board. It’s a bit easier to say, right?

IS PADDLE BOARDING ON LAKE TAHOE DIFFICULT FOR BEGINNERS?

Paddle boarding is much easier than it looks, and if you want, you can sit down or kneel rather than standing up on the board. The great thing about paddle boarding on Lake Tahoe is that if you stick close to the shore, you can avoid boat wakes, and the water stays quite shallow (and the shoreline is beautiful too).

CAN KIDS RENT A STAND UP PADDLE BOARD ON LAKE TAHOE?

Yes, we have paddle board rentals that are suitable for kids as young as eight years old. However, if a child is under 16 years old they must be accompanied by a parent or guardian when they’re out on Lake Tahoe.

DO I NEED TO WEAR A LIFE JACKET WHILE PADDLE BOARDING ON LAKE TAHOE?

California law states that anyone under 13 years old must wear a life jacket while out on Lake Tahoe although we encourage all paddlers to wear their life jackets to be safe. All others must have a life jacket with them on their paddle boards but aren’t required to wear the life jacket. You can bring your own life jacket with you or use one of ours at no extra charge.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING WHILE PADDLE BOARDING ON LAKE TAHOE?

At North Tahoe Paddle we provide lifejackets and paddles, but there are a few additional things we recommend taking with you while paddle boarding on Lake Tahoe. Sunscreen, water, and a hat to shade your face and eyes from the sun are all highly recommended. Outside of those items, we do not recommend taking too much more with you due to the design of the paddle board. Paddle Boarding on Lake Tahoe provides plenty of opportunities for amazing photos, and if you need them, we have dry bags and waterproof cell phone cases to keep your cameras and smartphones protected.

WILL I FALL OFF OF MY PADDLE BOARD?

You might, but most paddle boarders do not. Don’t expect to fall in the water, but be prepared to fall in just in case. Leave behind anything you don’t want to get wet. If you fall off your board, do not linger in the water. It is very easy to get back on the SUP boards from the water. Wearing the coiled ankle leash is required so that if you do fall off of your paddle board, the board won’t drift away from you.

CAN BOTH MY CHILD AND I BE ON ONE STAND UP PADDLE BOARD?

You can bring your child on your SUP as long as they are under 50 lbs. They should not paddle, but they can enjoy the ride.

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO TAKE MY PADDLE BOARD OUT OF THE WATER?

When taking your paddle board out of the water, the most important part is to avoid damaging the board and the fin in the rear of the board. When paddling into shore slow down to a stop as the water becomes approximately knee-deep. Carefully step off the side of the paddle board and grab the handle with your dominant hand. Carry the paddle board between your side and the arm of your dominant hand. Once on shore, place the paddle board on the sand with the fin pointing up in the air, and never sit or stand on the paddle board once it’s resting on the beach.
