KAYAKING FAQs

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO RENT A KAYAK?

Please visit our Rates page for all kayak rental pricing information.

ARE KAYAKS SAFE?

Kayaking on Lake Tahoe is safe for people of all skill levels, including beginners. We rent high-quality, stable equipment that’s well maintained, and well-equipped for kayaking on Lake Tahoe. For more information regarding safety, rules, and guidelines, visit our Rules and Guidelines Page.

DO YOU OFFER CLEAR KAYAK RENTALS?

We do not offer clear kayak rentals. We strongly believe that clear kayaks are not safe for variable water conditions such as Lake Tahoe due to stability issues, less durable materials, and poor handling in choppy conditions. They can also be less visible to other boaters, increasing the risk of collisions. Furthermore, clear kayaks have limited buoyancy, significantly raising the risk of capsizing. Sit-on-top kayaks (what we rent), in contrast, offer better stability, buoyancy, and maneuverability, making them more suitable for beginners and safer for navigating rough waters. Additionally, our sit-on-top kayaks have reinforced structures and higher weight capacities, ensuring a safer experience in challenging conditions.

DO I NEED TO WEAR A LIFE JACKET WHILE KAYAKING ON LAKE TAHOE?

Anyone under 13 years old will be required to wear a lifejacket, and it’s highly recommended for everyone else. But don’t worry, we have life jackets in all sizes that are free to use with your rental.

CAN KIDS AND DOGS RIDE IN YOUR KAYAK RENTALS?

Kids are absolutely welcome in our kayak rentals. Unfortunately, because our lakefront kayak rentals are located at a beach that is not dog friendly, we no longer allow dogs to accompany you on your kayak.

DO I NEED TO MAKE A RESERVATION TO RENT A KAYAK?

Kayak rental reservations are not required but are highly recommended! We tend to sell out fast, especially on the weekends. We offer lakefront kayak rentals in Kings Beach, California and delivery almost anywhere in North Lake Tahoe for multi-day reservations. To book a kayak rental reservation now, click here.

WHAT IS THE BEST TIME OF DAY TO GO KAYAKING ON LAKE TAHOE?

Although it varies day-to-day, typically the best time of day to go kayaking on Lake Tahoe is sometime in the morning as there is usually very little wind, and fewer boats on the lake than mid-day or in the afternoon.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING WHILE KAYAKING ON LAKE TAHOE?

At North Tahoe Paddle we provide lifejackets and paddles, but there are a few additional things we recommend taking with you while kayaking on Lake Tahoe. Sunscreen, water, and a hat to shade your face and eyes from the sun are all highly recommended. Kayaking on Lake Tahoe provides plenty of opportunities for amazing photos, and if you need them, we have dry bags and waterproof cell phone cases to keep your cameras and smartphones protected which we will happily provide to your group free of charge.

DO YOU HAVE ONE AND TWO PERSON KAYAKS FOR RENT?

Yes, we have both single kayaks and double kayaks for rent. Most of our double kayaks can fit two adults, plus a small child in between.

WHAT TYPES OF KAYAKS DO YOU RENT?

We rent sit-on-top kayaks. Sit-on-top kayaks are very user-friendly. They're stable, easy to get in and out of, and there is no feeling of confinement on them. They're also self-bailing, which means they have small holes (called "scupper holes") that allow the water to drain through them.

WILL I GET WET KAYAKING ON LAKE TAHOE?

More likely than not, you will get a little bit wet. Therefore, we do not recommend bringing valuables with you while kayaking on Lake Tahoe. If you do choose to bring a wallet, keys, smartphone, etc. with you, please let us know so that we can provide you with a dry bag to protect your valuables.
